Why does jointed wood need to be stored naturally after drying

As a woodworking glue manufacturer, we often encounter wood processing manufacturers asking us why the wood is so prone to cracking after using glue to join the wood if the drying and storage time is insufficient before splicing. This is mainly due to the internal stress inside the wood.

Let me share with you the reasons why wood needs to be stored naturally after it comes out of the drying room.

Why does internal stress occur

Processing of wood after drying out of the kiln. The first step is to put it in a dry material health warehouse for a certain period. This is mainly because, during the drying process, the moisture in the wood changes due to volatilization, which can easily cause changes in the internal wood grain and volume of the wood. It causes internal stress inside the wood.

What will be the consequences of not eliminating internal stress

If you use wood that still has internal stress for the paneling process, you may not see any problems in the initial stage of splicing. However, as the internal stress of the board is released, the glue layer will be pulled. If the internal stress is greater than the adhesive force of the glue,  this will lead to cracking.

How to eliminate internal stress in wood

Therefore, before using wood glue to join panels, the simplest way to eliminate internal stress is to store the wood for a certain period. The storage time is recommended to be more than 1 month (the specific time is determined by the ambient temperature, ambient humidity, board material, etc.), which can reduce the internal stress of wood.

Wood resting

At the same time, the moisture content of wood used for woodworking glue splicing must be strictly controlled, and the moisture content deviation of the wood in the same batch must be controlled to a small range. I hope the above knowledge will be helpful to you.
