With the rise of panel furniture in recent years, partners of furniture factories often ask which one is better, EVA hot melt adhesive or PUR hot melt adhesive. This is related to the issues that furniture factories need to consider in actual production and when choosing glue-coating machines in the future.
As a manufacturer with more than 10 years of experience in hot melt adhesive R&D and manufacturing, combined with our understanding of the development trend of the glue industry, we will analyze the bonding principles, advantages and disadvantages of the two, and which one is better, EVA hot melt adhesive or PUR hot melt adhesive?
First of all, from the composition of the two, PUR hot melt adhesive is mainly isocyanate polyurethane prepolymer. In contrast, EVA hot melt adhesive is primarily made of ethylene and vinyl acetate copolymerized under high pressure.
In terms of reaction, both are heating reactions, but PUR hot melt adhesive is a moisture-curing reaction, When the glue reacts with moisture in the air, it will be an irreversible reaction; In contrast, the heating reaction of EVA hot melt adhesive is a physical reaction. As long as it is heated to a certain temperature, it can be dissolved again and bonded to the substrate again. It is a reversible reaction.
EVA edge-banding hot melt adhesive has the highest market share in terms of current market applications. This is mainly because EVA hot melt adhesive is relatively simple to operate (glue application and subsequent cleaning of the glue pot, etc.), does not require a high construction environment, and is relatively cheap, which are all its advantages.
The disadvantage is that the amount of glue used will be relatively large, which will indirectly lead to thicker glue lines on the finished product and poorer appearance; the bonding strength is not as good as PUR hot melt adhesive, and because it can be reversed after the temperature rises, the high-temperature resistance is also average.
On the other hand, PUR hot melt adhesive is an irreversible chemical adhesive that solidifies by reacting with water vapor in the air after heating. Even if the product is heated again after solidification, it will not react a second time. Therefore, it is relatively resistant to high and low temperatures and water, especially for finished furniture used in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas.
At the same time, when PUR hot melt adhesive is used for edge banding, the amount of adhesive used is two-thirds less than that of EVA hot melt adhesive, so the glue line of the product will not be particularly obvious (suitable for use in high-end custom factories), and the appearance is more beautiful than EVA hot melt adhesive, and the bonding strength is more than twice that of EVA hot melt adhesive.
Speaking of the disadvantages of PUR hot melt adhesive, due to its irreversible characteristics, the product cannot be reworked and repaired once it is cured; at the same time, there are very high requirements for the ambient temperature (greater than 5°C) and humidity (greater than 50%) of the construction site, otherwise, the glue cannot be cured. At the same time, the equipment for PUR hot melt adhesive will be more expensive than that for EVA hot melt adhesive, which is a cost issue that needs to be considered.
The above are the advantages and disadvantages of PUR hot melt adhesive and EVA hot melt adhesive. You can choose which glue to use according to the actual production needs of your factory.
